Lab Instructions

Navigating lab testing with a functional medicine practice, may look different than with a traditional clinic. This page will walk you through what to expect, how to prepare, and where to go- whether you're using a specialty lab kit or visiting a local draw site.

Before Your Lab Draw

Read All Instructions Carefully

Unless told otherwise by Dr. Bayliss, lab tests, or blood draws, are best performed in the morning after a 12 hour fast.

Please schedule labs Monday- Thursday as early as possible so that same-day shipping by the lab is guaranteed.Labs taken before 11:15 am are considered the morning cutoff.

  • Do not take any “NUTRIENT SUPPORT" supplements for 24 hours before testing.

  • DO NOT take any supplements with BIOTIN in them for 72 hours prior to testing.

If Your Lab uses a kit that has been shipped to your home.

  • Please read the instructions of your kit in advance to be sure you understand what needs to be done prior to arriving for your lab draw. Example: some labs need urine frozen from the day before, have ice packs that need chilled etc.

  • Bring your entire kit and the copy of your lab orders when having blood drawn

  • If your kit came with ice packs, freeze them overnight and bring them to your appointment for shipping.

Thyroid supplementation:

  • If you are having thyroid testing done and you are already taking a prescription, skip your dose until after the draw or take it a 6 hours prior to the draw. Please let me know when you took your last dose of medication.

Hormone testing: Estrogen and Testosterone Restoration

If using topical oils or creams, in order to avoid peak level interference (which is about 2 hours after application) it is recommended to:

  • Switch testosterone to evenings

  • Skip morning estrogen application

  • Obtain blood draw early morning.

  • If using estrogen patch, aim to do testing on Day 2 of fresh patch application.

  • If using DHEA, withhold your dose for 48 hours.

  • If using Pregnenolone, hold for 72 hours.
